Seed Now! – Turfgrass Science at Purdue University

Seed Now!

We’re still in the middle of the optimum seeding window for cool-season turfgrasses. The optimum time to seed cool-season turfgrasses is between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15 in central IN, a week earlier in northern IN, and a week or so later in southern IN. It is important to seed as earlier as you can within the August to September window. As a very, very general rule, seedings made between Aug. 15 and Sep. 15 should be ready for use by Memorial Day. For every day you wait to seed after Sep. 15, it’ll take two to four days longer for it to mature. So if you seed Sep. 22 (a week late), the stand won’t be ready to use until at least the second week of June (2 weeks later).
