Noticing yellow to white patches in areas that were freshly mowed just prior to last week’s cold? Judging from what I’ve seen as well as the emails, you’re not alone. Taking a closer look at these areas, the leaf tips and maybe the full length of the leaf has yellowed or even turned necrotic (dead) (photos). This seems to be especially prevalent on areas that we were slightly scalped, but I have also seen it on more open areas as well as wetter depressions. This does not appear to be a disease or anything life threatening, but simply the tissue either dessicating from wind or died directly from the cold temperatures. The mowing immediately prior to the cold exposed succulent tissue that was likely more susceptible to cold temperatures and/or drying winds.. This is the first time I can remember seeing this extent of damage. The good news is that our turfgrasses grow from the bottom up and the areas should recover within a week or two of warmer temperatures.
